Tools you will need:

• Shovel
• A couple of wooden stakes
• String
• Line level
• Rubber mallet
• Stones of varying sizes

1. The first step in building a stone terrace is setting a string level. Use a line level to ensure the string is level. It's important that the string is level because it will be the guide you use in determining how high to stack the stones. Once the string line is in place, dig a trench about 4 inches deep and 2 feet wide behind it.

2. Start placing stones in the trench. You want to use the largest stones first.

3. It may be necessary to secure the stones in place by wedging smaller stones behind them.

4. Backfill soil up against the line of stones. This will further help to secure them in place.

5. Once you have the first row of large stones in place, use smaller stones to fill in the gaps and make the top of the wall level.

6. The next wall will be built behind the first to create a terraced effect. Follow the same procedure when constructing the second wall. After the first row of large stones is in place, fill in the bed that was created in between the wall with topsoil.

7. Continue adding rock to the second wall until it is complete.

8. The number of walls you build is entirely up to you. The only restrictions are the time you are willing to spend on the project and the budget you are working within. The areas created by the terracing make great raised planting beds.
